Drones

(Open Group)

Drones (also Unmanned Aerial Systems or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) are being explored for a spectrum of applications in conservation that include, but are not limited to, mapping, biodiversity inventories, antipoaching patrols, wildlife tracking and fire monitoring.

Challenges to the uptake of drone technology range from engineering and battery limitations, to privacy concerns and cost constraints. As platforms continue to evolve and become more cost-effective, the application of drones holds great promise.
