Pairing Scientists and Citizen Scientists with AI Assistants

Here' s a press release we put out today talking about how we're using a deep convolutional neural network to find and curate whale shark (Rhincodon typus) sighting data from YouTube and then natural language processing to attempt to determine date and location. The AI easily outpaces any researcher in the field in collecting raw volumes of sighting data from social media, but it does not (yet) replace a researcher in final data review and approval. We'll be making this automated agent a regular feature of our Wildbook platform moving forward, but we expect multiple rounds of refinement to determine the exact worekflow of its interaction with researchers and social media.
