Duties and Responsibilities

The UCL East Director’s Office will oversee many aspects of our new UCL East campus, including shared laboratories and workshops.  We are seeking a Workshop Manager to run our Light Fabrication Workshop which will be a key resource for several degree programmes and research activities, including those related to robotics, ecology, disability design and innovation, sensor systems and data.

The Light Fabrication Workshop Manager will be responsible for all aspects of the safe and smooth running of the workshop including purchase and maintenance of equipment and consumables, safety protocols, and user training.  You will work closely with a range of different people to ensure that the facility evolves over time to meet changing demands.   You will also play a key role in coordinating a group of technical staff supporting different facilities in the same building, for example looking for opportunities to work together to support staff and students and to help with the overall building management in matters such as health and safety and security.

This is a full-time, open-ended post, starting on 1st August 2022 which will be based on our new UCL East Campus in Stratford.

Key Requirements

A degree or demonstrable equivalent experience in a materials, making or engineering related subject, which enables them to provide high-level advice to students, fellow staff, and researchers on materials, concept, design process, CAD, manufacture, finish, assembly and/or installation of work.

Experience of working in a shared workshop or similar setting, with responsibility for a range of different complex tasks.

Experience of training or advising others regarding design, materials, manufacture etc in either a commercial, educational or ‘maker space’ environment. Experience of teaching, training, mentoring or demonstrating skills or crafts.
