Earthwatch is recruiting for an experienced systems/solutions architect, on a short-term basis, to research and develop a Web platform that will help us advance the field of citizen science. You will work in Earthwatch’s Science, Policy and Innovation team to provide technical input, leading on technical design of a Web platform, which includes a diverse array of citizen-science evaluation-tools. You will have a broad background in Application Design and Architecture, understanding the full development stack from user interface to back-end services and databases. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with solution design skills and preferably a background and interest in impact assessment and the use of technology in citizen science.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Role purpose:

This role will play a key part in one of our flagship projects, which aims to understand the impact of citizen science.  It is expected to explore innovative approaches and to research, design and recommend applications/tools to deliver the project requirements, including the detailed architecture of a Web platform.

Key deliverables:

This role will be part of a wider team, both internally and externally, and will be able to contribute to global and internal innovation. Key deliverables for this short term contract will be:

  • Collaborating with project partners (both technical and non-technical).
  • Understanding and effectively utilising cloud- and non-cloud-based technology capabilities and identifying potential off the shelf, cost effective, open data solutions, where applicable.
  • Identifying where it may be necessary for "non-standard" solutions to be developed.
  • Converting requirements into effective technical designs underpinned by robust architectural solutions.
  • Creating a TSD (Technical Solutions Document).
  • Ensuring that the solution is fully open-source and free to maintain.

REQUIREMENTS

Person specification:

  • Suitably qualified software engineer (at least to degree level, but preferably with MSc) with a background in technology design and and an excellent understanding of a wide range of applicable technologies
  • Demonstrable experience in the design and planning of software tools/solutions (including Web apps) preferably within research and innovation projects
  • Demonstrate keen problem-solving skills
  • Have a knowledge of the SDLC (solution delivery lifecycle)
  • A demonstratable familiarity with the software development process (specifically requirements gathering and analysis/design)
  • Experience managing technical and business requirements for systems architecture
  • Good and relevant experience with Computer Systems Validation (CSV)
  • A team player with excellent relationship management skills
  • Listening skills, fully understanding end-user needs and perspectives
  • Office and team working experience – particularly in virtual teams internationally
  • Flexible, self-motivated and goal-oriented with a proactive attitude and a clear, methodical and structured approach to work
  • Proven ability to deliver software and documentation to a high standard, on time and within budget
  • Written and spoken fluency in English
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Earthwatch

  • A passion and enthusiasm for environmental issues
  • A passion for citizen science, and current developments in the field of citizen science
  • Romanian language skills
