According the most recent WWF Living Planet Report, we are losing the planet's biodiversity at an unprecedented rate. There are numerous factors that contribute to the grim statistics, from the indirect effects of climate change to the direct results of wildlife crime. Conservation of natural resources, including water, marine and land habitats, and wildlife, is of the utmost importance and is an urgent and challenging task. Recent challenges, such as poaching of animals, loss of habitat, and increasing effects of climate change, have made conservation an increasingly difficult task. Data mining and AI techniques have shown promise in addressing several challenges in this space and have the potential to accomplish much more.
The workshop welcomes papers including but not limited to the following topics:
- habitat modeling and monitoring
- ice, water, and forest cover monitoring
- species monitoring and modeling (population size, dynamics, migration, range)
- conservation area planning
- adversarial modeling and game theory
- computer vision, NLP and audio methods for conservation
- areal/autonomous vehicle and satellite techniques for conservation
- prevention, detection, and fighting of wildlife crime
- influencing behaviors to reduce the threat to wildlife and promote conservation engagement
- human-wildlife interaction
Submission
Papers should be formatted using the KDD formatting requirements ( https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template). We solicit two kinds of submissions for this workshop:
- Full Papers reporting new results up to 8 pages.
- Short Papers (up to 2 pages) reporting preliminary results, summarizing results of work that has already been published elsewhere, describing an open wildlife conservation problem, or proposing ideas for bringing in new computational methods into the field.
Papers should be submitted to https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=dmaic19. Oral presentations and posters will be selected from among the submissions after peer reviews. This workshop is non-archival.
