Learning Opportunity: GPS Workshop in Goa by Wild Otters

Wild Otters is hosting a GPS workshop in Goa, India. In this workshop, participants will learn the basics of using a GPS unit and how to integrate GPS systems into conservation projects. The cost of the workshop is Rs 3500 and will be held February 25th to the 26th.

WILD OTTERS is a research organization that focuses on otter conservation. We offer hands-on training on how best to use a GPS and how it can help improve your project. We will help you understand how to analyze GPS data in the comfort of your own laptop.

What you will learn:

  • Basic settings of GPS
  • How triangulation works
  • Understanding satellite errors
  • How to mark way points
  • Using GPS for tracking routes
  • Using GPS in forest and mangrove habitat
  • Effective ways to import and structure your GPS data
  • Correlating your GPS data to Google earth
  • Interpreting GPS data
  • How to include GPS data in your project

Chorao Island offers a wonderful opportunity for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts. The WILD OTTERS field base is set beside a forest and close to a mangrove habitat. It is also situated close to the well-known Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary. You will also have a chance to test your newly acquired skills in both, the forest and the bird sanctuary.

There will be a night trail organized on 25th at no extra cost. Those interested can participate.

Cost:

Rs. 3500. Students can avail a discount of Rs. 500 on request. Price includes one night stay at Wild Otters field base on Chorao Island and food/refreshments provided during the workshop.
