You’re invited to the WILDLABS Variety Hour, our monthly community event connecting you to the exciting projects, research, and ideas that are happening in conservation tech right now. Brought to you with the support of our partner Amazon Web Services (AWS), we're excited to bring you a whole new season right through 2023.

You never know what you’ll find and who you’ll meet at our Variety Hour, and that’s part of the fun! You might catch speed talks from community members working around the world, learn from a leading conservation tech expert, discover a new tool, test your wildlife trivia skills, find a great opportunity - maybe you’ll even do all of the above.

The WILDLABS Variety Hour isn’t a show, or a lecture, or a workshop. It's an engaging, fun, and interactive gathering, giving you a welcoming space to share your own projects and resources, ask and answer questions, have insightful conversations, meet collaborators, make friends, and get to know the conservation tech community in a new way.

Great ideas and discussions are sparked when people who share a passion for conservation tech unite. When you come along to the Variety Hour, you’re joining a space full of people who care about conservation tech just like you; when you leave the Variety Hour, we hope you’ll take away fresh inspiration and the knowledge that you belong to a global community who are making an impact in our field all around the world.

The Variety Hour: September

This month, we'll have three speed talks from Kenneth Mubea, Vincent Chan, and Stefano Puliti, followed by a longer presentation from Sybille Klenzendorf.

Kenneth Mubea will kick off our speed talks. He's the capacity building lead at Digital Earth Africa, and will talk about their work to make EO data free and accessible, delivering decision-ready products to the African continent. Wing Sing Chan is a PhD candidate with the Unviersity of Hong Kong, using open source accelerometers to track the movement of a cryptic species of turtle. He shared this work at the recent BES MOVE 2023 conference, so we've invited him along to give us a special update on his work. And finally, Stefano Puliti is a research scientist at the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research where his work targets the use of remotely sensed data for forest resource assessment. He's going to share some of his recent work using 3D photogrammetric data from UAVs for pre- and post-harvest inventory of forest biophysical properties, and talk about the open data, ML-ready benchmark datasets he has been creating.

For our in-depth project talk, we're delighted WWF's Sybille Klenzendorf will be joining us to talk about the polar bear ear tag they've been working on for the past few years. Sybille will share the innovation and design process, the current development status of the tags, and talk through their current challenges and next steps. She's keen to get feedback from our community and to find potential partners for next phases, so this should be a great, interactive session to get involved in.

Variety Hour May | This month, Jared Marley joins us to talk about his team's new Luminous tracking collar, Andrea Santy will introduce the $11M XPRIZE Wildfire, a 4-year competition to innovate firefighting technologies that will end destructive wildfires, Ellie Warren will share the things she wished you knew about effectively showcasing your work for conservation tech readers, and Luciano Foglia will talk about his efforts to develop a system for monitoring snow leopards in Kyrgyzstan.
