Aerialod will take any standard elevation model from GIS as an input, such as .tif or .asc files. While the features are a bit limited at the moment, it's a great free and open source tool if you need to create really effective visualisations of elevation for a report or poster. While it's designed for visualising elevation data you can also use Aerialod for visualising any single band raster file, for example showing crime hot spots.
